Ammo priming machine is a rotary-type, high-capacity, and convertible primer-inserting machine. It is built following the ATEX Directive and is certified ex-proof. Most importantly, this ammo priming machine is equipped with quality control instruments to perform both inspection on the primers and cartridge cases and checks on the jobs completed.

On this ammo priming machine, the primer inspection is performed during the feeding of primers. Primers are fed to the ammo priming machine by means of gravity. The primers are stopped mechanically and the primer anvil is checked by a sensor. If the primer anvil is missing or the anvil is positioned incorrectly the primer will be ejected. This mechanical stop allows primer anvil check and also a gap in the primer feeding line between primers. In case a primer is ignited the adjacent ignition of primers will be stopped in this gap.

The ammo priming machine is structured on a camshaft mechanism that rotates two index wheels simultaneously. The first index wheel performs an inspection on the cartridge case and it is called the inspection wheel. The second index wheel performs the primer insertion and is called priming wheel. The inspection wheel transfers approved cartridge cases to the priming wheel to be primed.

The inspection wheel has five twin stations. The cartridge cases are fed to the inspection wheel at the first station. This case loading station is equipped with sensors to mark the station as full or empty. The next station on the inspection wheel is the cartridge case mouth control station. This station checks the circularity of the cartridge case mouth and corrects minor defects. The next station is the flash hole station, and it checks the flash hole with a laser beam. It detects the cartridge cases without a flash hole. Furthermore, pre-primed cartridge cases fed to the system by accident can be detected at this station and ejected before reaching the primer insertion station. Insufficient cartridge cases detected at the case mouth and flash hole control stations are ejected from the system before transferring to the priming wheel. Cartridge cases that pass the inspection are transferred from inspection wheel to the priming wheel at this station.

The priming wheel of the ammo priming machine has seven twin stations. The first station is the extractor groove control station and it has two functions. First, it tells whether the cartridge case has an extractor groove. Second, it detects if the cartridge case is positioned incorrectly and stops the machine to avoid jams which could lead to mechanical damage. The next station is the primer insertion station and it inserts primers as long as the station has a cartridge case with an extractor groove. The primer crimping station operates mechanically. If the machine runs out of primers before it runs out of cartridge cases the operator is informed at the HMI screens with an alarm. In this case, the stake is removed from the primer crimping station so the empty primer pockets won’t be crimped. The camera control station has two functions. First, it checks and tells if the crimping is accomplished. Second, it tells whether the primer is oriented correctly. The primer depth control station checks the primer depth with a high accuracy probe. All cartridge cases exit the primer wheel from the exit station. The exit is equipped with a pneumatic flap separating rejected cartridge cases and approved cartridge cases into different exits. In case the discharge fails and the cartridge case remains in the priming wheel a mechanical switch located right after the exit station will detect its existence and it will stop the rotation of the ammo priming machine immediately.
